IT was a right royal occasion for Huddersfield’s famous Choral Society.
The internationally acclaimed choir achieved one of its greatest honours when it performed at the 1986 Royal Variety Show. The grand event, at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, London, was attended by the Queen Mother, the Duchess of York and PrincessAlexandra and her husband, Mr Angus Ogilvy. It was televised on BBC1.
The choir sang Gordon Langford’s arrangement of Yorkshire melodies, which included Scarborough Fair, The Grand Old Duke of York and On IlklaMoor Baht ‘at.
The three-minute performance was given from the steps and balcony outside the main auditorium and was shown live to the audience from a television screen on stage. The society had the distinction of being the penultimate act on the star studded bill.
For the finale eight members of the choir – general secretary Jim Stafford, treasurer Graham Fearnley, choir secretary Sandy Cole, Rita Chambers, Anne Jenkinson, Margaret Fairless, Stuart Manning and Martin Crossley – went on stage, and the rest of the choir walked into the auditorium singing England Your England with ‘forces’ favourite’ Vera Lynn (pictured inset), who made a surprise guest appearance near the end.
Choirmaster Brian Kay and the eight choir members in the finale, who represented each section of the choir, remained onstage while the Queen Mother and her party were introduced to the main stars.
Meanwhile a scheme to boost community spirit on the Walpole estate – described as an area of the greatest deprivation – and extend its social centre and build a children’s play area was backed by Kirklees councillors.
An application for the Crosland Moor development – planned by the council’s leisure services section – was granted planning permission by the Huddersfield development control committee. The extension would include a hall, storage and activities room, with a play area at the rear of the Dryclough recreation ground.
A planners report said the size of the proposal was clearly in excess of what would normally be approved, but the circumstances were different as the development was specifically for the benefit of residents. The lack of playing facilities greatly concerned residents.
The present centre was two, two-bedroomed houses with small inadequate rooms. The extensions would cater for large gatherings and have disabled facilities. Extra space would allow for under-fives and for the running of creches.
Deputy chairman Clr Les Preece said the project was vital to enhance the quality of life for people in the area, particularly children.
Kirklees Council was pounds 1/2 m overspent on council house repairs – and councillors were warned that rents would soar unless action was taken to cut costs. Unless drastic action was taken the overspending would rise to amassive pounds 1.2mby the end of the financial year. The budget earmarked pounds 10.6m for repairs.
But the authors of the report – finance directorMr Geoff Driver and housing chief Jim McAusland – were divided on how the issue should be tackled. Mr Driver urged that the overspending be set at pounds 1/2 m, but Mr McAustland suggested that no action be taken.
Liberal spokesman Clr Kathleen Hasler said any cutbacks in repairs would be disastrous and if necessary rents should rise, but Labour leader Clr John Harman backedMr Driver and called for a further report into the problem. The housing committee supported his proposal.
The patient population at Storthes Hall Hospital was expected to fall to around 500 by March 1988. Twelve wards were scheduled for closure before then with an average of just under 30 patients a ward – a total of more than 300, Huddersfield Health Authority was told.Mr Tony Keighley, assistant general manager, said the process of transferring patients into the community was continuing, and at the Holme Valley Memorial Hospital site there would be a 24-bed patient unit for elderly and mentally confused people.

‘THE BOYS SAY: Ah, we’re so proud to be Glaswegian! Yup, almost as soon as our native city started rolling out its plans for urban regeneration, several other post-industrial British cities were clearly following suit.
In fact so successful was Glasgow’s impressive lead that many Mancunian developers and numerous city officials and town planners visited their northern counterpart to see first hand the way things are done in Scotland.
And so it came to pass that Manchester proudly began to lift its smoky mantle, to clean up its architectural act, re-use previously redundant warehouses and build residential properties anew.
Soon bustling restaurants opened and shopping improved many times over

HONG KONG — As if Hong Kong’s 6.8 million mobile phones — one for every man, woman and child — weren’t enough, locals are suddenly swarming to embrace the original means of talking while walking.
Fans say walkie-talkies are good for chatting up friends, making plans or listening in on strangers. Some wear them like wristwatches, recalling the old “Dick Tracy” comics, in the latest incarnation of gadget-crazed Hong Kong’s irresistible urge to stay continually connected.
The trend picked up early in 2003, when the territory’s government relaxed controls on two-way radios, letting consumers use them within 2 miles without a license.
Forty-year-old financial analyst Andrew Lam recently bought his first walkie-talkie for about $45 after his friends started using them. Lam bought it primarily for hiking trips but admits he also gets a kick out of tuning into other people’s conversations.
“I was nosy and wanted to see what other people were talking about,” Lam said. “They usually talk about general stuff
