  • The DUI Scarlet Letter and Its Impact on Your Car Insurance

Is Florida going pink? If Florida state Senator Mike Fasano gets his way, many Florida residents just might be. Late last year, Senator Fasano filed a bill that would require DUI offenders to drive with bright pink licenses plates starting with the letters DUI. “Maybe it will embarrass people and keep them from drinking and driving,” Fasano said. “Maybe they’ll think twice.” The proposed bill also has a controversial and unique provision that allows police officers to pull over and check on the driver at any time, without probable cause. If passed, Florida will join Ohio, Iowa and Minnesota, all with similar special license plate laws in place.
Currently, Ohio has one of the strictest DUI laws in the country. Ohio DUI offenders are issued yellow plates with crimson serial numbers. These plates are issued at a judge’s discretion to people with more than one DUI conviction and restricted driving privileges. Many feel this punishment is a public shaming tactic, similar to that of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s 1850 novel “The Scarlet Letter,” which is about a woman ordered to wear a scarlet letter “A” on her chest as punishment for adultery

  • Some Useful Tips to Save You From Getting it Wrong

    Bicycle Types

There are many types of bicycles to choose from. Which type you choose should depend on where you will be riding and what your purpose will be.

    Some questions to ask are:

Am I riding for pleasure? Will I be riding for exercise? Will I want to go off road? How much do I want to spend?

There are touring bikes, utility bikes, mountain bikes and recumbent bicycles, just to name a few. People ride bikes for many reasons. They may use their bike as transportation or just for fun. They can also be used as an exercise tool and for sport. Touring bikes are designed for long trips and have the ability to transport your personal belongings and other gear. These types of bikes are suitable for riding around the countryside and enjoying the view.Mountain bikes are built to be used off road and have sturdy durable frames and wide-gauge tires. Suspension systems such as gas shocks or air shocks are featured to absorb the impact when on rough terrain.

Recumbent Bicycles are built to maximize comfort and minimize resistance. It may be difficult to get used to being horizontal but if you have any injuries that may prevent you from cycling then you may want to check this type out.

Tandem bikes can be used for those who have some physical challenges. Some considerations are to make sure the bike fits both people. This will help prevent injuries. An important thing to remember is that there can only be one captain.

Downhill biking is usually done on steep terrains. It may not be for everyone.

BMX bikes are designed for tricks, stunts and racing on hilly dirt tracks. There are competitions that you can enter and even money to be won.

Single track is a form of mountain biking that is performed on very narrow off road trails that can be steep and narrow with sharp turns and other obstacles. This type of riding takes a lot of upper body strength. There are bikes that include even the youngest member of the family by attaching a smaller two wheeled bike on the end of a bike.

Ice biking is just what you think it is. People ride through ice and snow. It may not be for everyone because it is more tiring to peddle through the snow. With all of these choices, no one should be left out.

Bicycle Seats and Comfort Bikes Make Cycling for Life Easier

For many who love cycling for life, riding their bikes can be a disappointing experience. While bicycle seats are designed for maximum comfort and efficiency, they are not comfortable for everyone. Many riders experience discomfort while riding or after riding. The shape of the seat can cause soreness or discomfort. Luckily, there are a number of options for those who love to ride, but who do not love traditional bike seats. First, many recumbent bikes have a different type of seat. If you do not mind the way you have to sit and ride with this type of bike, it is a great option.

There are also other types of comfort bikes that work wonderfully

  • We all own the roads, not just car drivers

We all own the roads, not just car drivers

0 Comments | Herald Express; Torquay (UK), Dec 19, 2009

I AGREE wholeheartedly with the title of the letter from P Mindham on November 28 — ‘Forget speed cameras, all road users should show respect for others’, but have some difficulty in resolving any sense from his meanderings in the second half of his letter where he launches a tirade seemingly against all cyclists, implying that they believe they own the road, and should be compelled to wear helmets, and have third party insurance, and indeed pay something referred to as ‘Road Tax’.

I don’t believe that there is any such thing as ‘Road Tax’. Most cyclists as members of the community do in fact ‘own the road’ as general taxpayers whose contributions form the basis for the way the infrastructure of this country is financed.

Roads are primarily for people, be they on foot, horseback or bicycle, whatever – the exception being motorways (for which I believe we all pay, including the large portion of the population who do not drive or use them).

If you wish to use a car on the highway, then you have to pay a Vehicle Excise Duty, which is what a lot of people refer to as a ‘Road tax’, although whether the revenue generated from this pays for the roads, I don’t know but would doubt it. There are now many cars that pay little or no Vehicle Excise Duty, although they still pollute. On that basis I fail to see how anyone could call for bicycle riders to pay additional tax.

If the poor downtrodden motorist wanted to create a valid argument about the costs of running their vehicle, they would do well to question the way the airline industry works, and the disgraceful Pounds 10billion of hidden subsidies they are given by the government, by not paying tax and VAT on their fuel.

As far as taxing cyclists goes, considering the state of the roads around here, I think people should be paid or given tax breaks to encourage them to ride bikes, and be able to repair them after the damage sustained.

Indeed there is a very good scheme which some employers use to allow employees to buy new bikes ‘tax free’

Tax credit on U.S. autos would solve all our problems

Re “Consumers don’t listen to politicians when buying cars,” April 5: George Will is right on in his commentary.

President Barack Obama and his Democratic administration care little about solving our domestic auto problem. If they really cared about this country’s workers and industries, they could expand the $7,500 tax credit currently scheduled for purchases of the Volt electric car to include all domestically produced autos

New 130,000-ton Cruise Ship Ordered for Carnival Corporation & plc’s Carnival Cruise Lines Unit

    PR Newswire, Dec 1, 2009

MIAMI, Dec. 1 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Carnival Corporation & plc (NYSE/LSE: CCL; NYSE: CUK) has reached an agreement with Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri to construct a 130,000-ton cruise ship for its Carnival Cruise Lines brand, scheduled to enter service in spring 2012.

To be built at Fincantieri’s Monfalcone yard under a U.S. dollar denominated contract, the all-in cost of the vessel is approximately $200,000 per lower berth.

The new 3,690-passenger vessel will offer many of the same innovations featured on the recently launched Carnival Dream, as well as some exciting new elements to be announced at a later date.

Like Carnival Dream, which has earned accolades for its creative design and on-board amenities, the new 130,000-ton ship will include a WaterWorks aqua park with a 300-foot-long corkscrew water slide, a stunning indoor/outdoor cafe and live entertainment venue called Ocean Plaza, and a wide range of staterooms including deluxe ocean views with two-bathrooms, some of which feature five berths and hold particular appeal for families.

Expansive, modern facilities for children and teens, a 23,750-square-foot Cloud 9 Spa, and The Lanai, an outdoor promenade featuring cantilevered whirlpools that extend over the ship’s sides, will be included, as well.

Already under construction at Fincantieri is the second sister ship to the Carnival Dream, the 130,000-ton Carnival Magic, which is scheduled to enter service in May 2011.

“Barely in service for two months, Carnival Dream is already earning rave reviews from guests and travel agents and ordering a third Dream-class ship speaks volumes about the confidence we have in the continued success of this series,” said Gerry Cahill, Carnival Cruise Lines’ president and CEO. “The Dream class of ships embodies the evolution of our brand by providing the type of fun, affordable vacations that today’s consumers are seeking,” he added.

Commented Fincantieri’s Chief Executive Officer Giuseppe Bono, “Fincantieri has been working with our partners at Carnival Corporation & plc for more than 25 years. During this time it has been our privilege to build some of the most beautiful and technically advanced ships in cruising and we are honored to construct a third Dream-class ship for the Carnival Cruise Lines brand.”

  • Open gate ‘led to toddler’s death in pool’

Open gate ‘led to toddler’s death in pool’

0 Comments | News (Portsmouth, England), The, Dec 9, 2009

Anna Hider was just 17 months old when she drowned in the swimming pool at her foster parents’ home.

The second day of an inquest being held into her death at Portsmouth Crown Court was told how her foster father had been cleaning the pool on the evening she died.

He left the pool, which was surrounded by a 4ft- high fence, to collect some water from the kitchen and clean a filter.

But instead of closing the gate, he kicked it because his hands were full.

The foster father, who has been given anonymity, said: ‘Instead of turning round and shutting it I thought “I’m only going to be in the kitchen”.

‘I thought “I am only going to go down there to get some water”.

‘I had taken a few paces down and I realised it had not shut.

I turned round and looked at it. The bar was against it and it had not shut.’

The inquest was told that after filling his bucket with water and cleaning the filter he spoke to his wife in the conservatory for three or four minutes.

She asked him to take a sleeping bag upstairs.

While upstairs he went to the toilet and also checked an e-mail.

He told the court: ‘I had been totally distracted and I had forgotten what I should be doing.’

As he returned downstairs, his biological son almost ran into him while he was racing to get a neighbour to come to Anna’s aid.

During the time the foster father was in the house, Anna had fallen in the pool.

The court was told the family had strict safety rules about always closing the gate of the swimming pool
